The Sanctuary, nestled between Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Central Volcanic Range Biosphere Reserve, is home to a stunning diversity of wildlife. Its rivers—Rio Patria, Rio General, and Rio Sucio—run through some of the most biodiverse areas of the region, supporting a rich ecosystem.
The Sanctuary provides a refuge for a variety of species, sharing its ecosystem with nearby La Selva Biological Station, one of the world’s most important tropical research centers. Located 27 kilometers from The Sanctuary, La Selva has been the site of long-term studies on tropical biodiversity and conservation. Similar ecosystems are found in The Sanctuary, hosting over 467 bird species, 55 amphibian species, 110 reptiles, and 72 mammals, including jaguars, ocelots, and Baird’s Tapir. Additionally, the insect life includes over 5,000 species of moths and 450 species of ants, reflecting the region’s complexity.
The Sanctuary’s plant life mirrors the richness of the fauna. Sharing characteristics with La Selva’s ecosystem, the land supports over 5,000 vascular plant species, including over 700 tree species like Pentaclethra macroloba and Socratea exorrhiza. These trees form the foundation of an intricate web of life, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem.
The Sanctuary is poised to work alongside La Selva Biological Station and other research institutions to promote conservation, education, and sustainable tourism. Through these partnerships, we aim to protect biodiversity while fostering research and educational programs that benefit the environment and local communities.
